Are You Getting Enough? - Water That Is...read more
The majority of symptoms are related to the restriction of the urethra ( the urine carrying tube from the bladder which is “clamped” by the enlarged prostate) and gradual loss of bladder function resulting in the most common symptoms as shown below:
1) a hesitant, interrupted, weak stream
2) urgency and leaking or dribbling
3) more frequent urination, especially at night
Interestingly, the size of the enlarged prostate is not always directly proportional to the degree of restriction and urine stoppage. Some men with severe enlargement have very little blockage, and the opposite is also true where a small enlargement can cause a major urine blockage. But generally speaking an enlarged prostate gland will have some impact on urination.
Urinary retention may be come apparent when drinking alcohol, cold temperatures or after a long period of immobility if the affected person already has a partial blockage. In some instances this type of symptom is the individual's first indicator that something is wrong so never hesitate and always consult your Doctor to rule out more serious conditions.
If left untreated, BPH, can lead to urinary tract infections, bladder or kidney damage, incontinence and bladder stones which is all the more reason to visit you G.P. And of course you could adopt this site's mantra of; “Prevention Has To Be Better Than Cure” with appropriate lifestyle changes such as prostate-friendly foodstuffs and supplements to name but a few; and prostate massage either external or internal.
And remember sex does take on a completely new dimension as we age, but to take full advantage of this middle-age bonanza, you will need a healthy prostate gland.
