The three main prostate problems featured on BlokeHealth are Prostatitis, Prostate Cancer and Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH). The first two conditions will be discussed very briefly as they are outside the scope of this site, but BHP is something that the majority of men will experience to some degree as they age and will be looked at in more detail.
Prostatitis: Is caused by a bacterial infection which makes the prostate swell, and usually affects young and middle-aged men. Symptoms can include fever, chills, and pain in the pelvic and lower back areas. Some men will never fully rid themselves from this infection as the condition will recur at odd times, but the symptoms usually become milder. Antibiotics will often be used to treat this sickness.
Prostate Cancer: This is the most serious of all prostate problems and can lead to death if left untreated. This type of cancer is second only to skin cancer in the U.S. Early diagnosis is essential as this is a slow disease and is possible to stabilise the cancer before it worsens. If you have any worries, see your doctor a.s.a.p.
Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH): This is a general term used to describe an enlarged prostate that doesn’t have cancerous causes. The possibility of contracting this illness increases as men grow older. However, only about 50% of men who have BPH require any form of treatment.
Because BPH causes the prostate gland to enlarge, the swelling can eventually block the urethra, making it difficult for BPH sufferers to urinate. It can also cause incontinence and dribbling after urinating and the possibilities of infection. Those who have BPH have a frequent urge to urinate, especially at night. Doctors usually conduct rectal exams in order to diagnose this medical condition.
